[the video feed is accompanied by a very irritated, very british voice with a very important question:]
Is this someone's idea of a joke?
[this of course refers to the pile of old tape recorders at floor level currently being shown on the screen.]
I'll have you know, I don't find this amusing in the slightest. Nearly broke my neck tripping over these damned things.

[He was not actually kidding about that.]

[he’s about seven months behind, after all.]

[They make a satisfying pop.]

[he knows murmur is not on the same page re: spooky tape recorders linked to an eldritch fear entity continuing to exist, but jon's gotta at least try to talk him out of it.]
They really are just going to come back.
no subject
[Just a few? Just let him pop some of them, Jon!]
Hardly a reason to surrender.

I’m not altogether certain that destroying the tape recorders wouldn’t also be … mm, hazardous to my health? They’re connected to the Eye, after all. As am I.
no subject
no subject
As for how I’m sure the recorders are related to the Eye … it’s difficult to explain. I just Know. Like how I Know I’m the Archivist, and I Know that the Archivist belongs to the Eye.
no subject
[Over confident as he was in his initial assessment that they weren't sentient and therefore nothing to be concerned about he didn't stop to think if they may still have an influence on Jon. Which makes destroying them significantly more problematic than initially anticipated.
Sigh.]
Very well, but I reserve the right to remove them from a conversational space.
[He doesn't like to be recorded.]
no subject
That's fair. I, erm - I don't have any control over them, obviously, or else I'd make sure they didn't come 'round in the first place.
no subject
It's a good lesson that he needs to be extra mindful these days. It's something to work on.]
I expect they cannot enter areas I have warded, though I'd be interested to experiment as to whether or not they can when you have been invited in.
no subject
I suppose if it would set your mind at ease, I could assist with such an experiment. Which areas do you have warded?
no subject
My cabin should suffice for the test, should you be so inclined.
[He's not necessarily going to tell Jon every warded area. Some are secret for a reason.]
no subject
Right, [jon says aloud, mainly to himself, because of course a cabin should be warded, that makes perfect sense,] yes, of course. Whenever you’d like. It’s not like I have a work schedule, after all.
[he … sorta wishes he had one though. not having work to bury himself under is driving jon a little bit bonkers.]
no subject
[It's completely logical. Why would one not ward their private space into an appropriate sanctuary? That's generally the wisest and first step in any new domain.]
I am open whenever you are. I likewise find my schedule rather empty while we are on our long journey. Anomalous circumstances notwithstanding.
[There's really not much to do in the middle of space until Navi hits a nebula and ruins their time for a few days to a week or so. This lack of purpose really is maddening. Something else they have in common.]

Jon! You're awake!
no subject
Alex! You're still here - erm, I hope that's a good thing.
[he's delighted to hear from her but he's also been apprised of what's happened during the time he was in stasis. so. could go either way.]
It's - it's good to hear from you. How have you been?
no subject
[Seems the best way to handle it: radically accepting it.]
I'm okay! Better to be back aboard Navi, that's for sure.
no subject
no subject
You know.
[Alex just says with a laugh because honestly. ]
Most people wouldn’t qualify something without adding the ‘too’ to that. It definitely speaks to how insane our lives are even back home.
no subject
It rather does, yes. But I suppose most people aren't working with the fate of the world hung in the balance, either.
[#justprotagonistthings]
Is your, erm ... is Dr. Strand still about as well?
no subject
Yeah, that’s definitely true for sure.
And yes, he is. I forget was Simon here when you were awake?

[And has been lowkey feeding on her nightmares, since she was back home nbd.]
He's from later than either of us, but doesn't remember any breaks of time back home. Trust me, Simon would have remembered if I'd gone missing for a year or something.

Occupational hazard, I'm afraid. [sure, let's go with that.] It's - they tend to show up wherever I am ... though not usually so many all at once.

Archivist. I work for the Magnus Institute in London, and I started out wanting to digitize the collection of statements I inherited from the previous Archivist, only some of them wouldn’t record digitally. Thus, the tape recorders.
[and his life has been a shitshow ever since. 🙃]
I, erm - I don’t think we’ve met. I’m Jon.
no subject
I’m Ella. But isn’t even tape digital? Like not as digital as like. Digital but also digital.
no subject
A pleasure. And yes, that has been pointed out to me previously. I don't know why a cassette tape works when other more digital methods don't, actually ... it just does.
['cause ceaseless watcher says so.]
Are you - erm, do you happen to be rather well versed in digital technology?
no subject
Nope! I’m a forensic tech. So I know a little bit about allllllllllllloooottttt of things.

I think it’s more an Archivist thing, actually. Why, you don’t have anything weird mysteriously turn up at the Usher Foundation?
[other than zombies.]
no subject
You mean other than my boss’ bullshit premonitions and way too many people who are related to one another? Nope. Not really.

We’ve got an artifact department too. Fucking stupid demon bell.
And not that I know of. I’m guessing they’re not just light reading?
no subject
[that's not actually all that surprising, given the sorts of things that he ends up reading statements about. he just needs a little clarification.]
What, was it possessed by a demon? Or - or used to summon demons?
[jon would've drawn the line at believing in demons, if not for the fact that he's met murmur and saw what went down in xanadu.]
No, not light reading at all - books formerly collected by a man named Jurgen Leitner, all of which had some sort of supernatural affiliation. For example, there was a book titled Ex Altiora, belonging to the Vast, which was reported to cause a feeling of vertigo while reading it. Leitner had quite a library of these books, and many of them were scattered after he and his library were attacked some twenty years ago. They've featured in some of the statements I've read as Archivist, and we even have a few kept in Artefact Storage - securely, of course.
[he doesn't think there's a need to bring up his own personal brush with a leitner in childhood at this juncture. that horrid book about mister spider still haunts him to this day.]

[Julia knows that she's probably being more than a little bit flippant with the term 'monster' but considering not only is she a werewolf, but the fact that the Slaughter is more than a little interested in that dangerous anger of us makes her think that she can get away with it.
But her voice turns thoughtful for a moment.]
Were there other books tied to other Powers?
