you know i won't let you get away.
WHO: OPEN to all passengers.
WHAT: General mingle log for the first part of the month, including new partner pairing stuff.
WHERE: Navi, all over.
WHEN: Now until the next event (through Feb. 20).
WARNINGS: If things get messy and/or upsetting, please put warnings in your comment subject lines! And if you absolutely can't keep from strangling your new partner, please report it on the death page.
Hello, passengers! Today begins just like normal, but itβs far from an ordinary day. On this fine point in space-time, passengers will notice a little something different when it comes to the glyphs marked on the backs of their hands.
They're glowing. The light is a deep shade of blue, and it's slowly blinking on and off. Maybe it's searching for something? It's entirely possible, because affected passengers will also feel a gentle tugging sensation that stops once they've come face to face with their partners. The glyph will switch to glowing a steady blue once partners are synced with each other, and they'll be able to communicate telepathically with each other, too.
Have fun getting to know each other a little better! Or, you know. Yelling at each other. Just try to keep the murder to a minimum, OK?

Closed to Murmur
Getting up from his place at his desk, Kankri decided with a resolute sigh that he would just go find out what it was. It didn't feel urgent or necessity, but clearly something needed his attention and it wasn't writing massive booklets for the humans and other such creatures that may be lurking around here to understand insensitivities. Those were important, but the need to get up and check was discerningly overwhelming his normal activities.
The hallways turned to doorways and the walk turned to a stand, eventually. His look turned something into a perplexed one and everything didn't exactly make sense. This wasn't Richard's room as far as Kankri had done his homework on. ...Alright a knock to the door might just do the trick to find out exactly who it was. Maybe. Unless the indication was wrong, but...
Well, he waited patiently. All in time.
Disaster time!
Besides, he had a golem to work on and it was nearly complete. That was until the knock came. Setting his tools aside he made his way to answer the door, wondering at who it could possibly be. It wasn't as though he had many callers... hopefully it wasn't Strand coming by to start an argument.
When he opened the door to find Kankri there he actually appeared mildly surprised. "Hello, what brings you..." And then he felt it, that familiar effect of the pairing completing. Just to be sure he tugged low his glove to check and sure enough, solid blue. "Ah, I see. You were more prompt than I. Would you like to come in?"
πππππππππππππ
Murmur was talking, that was for certain. Some of it was simply starting to click in and he realized that the parings may be temporary with the solid blue light on the back of his hand, too. "...Oh I see." It was a soft, half understanding and he seemed resolute to try to catch his mind properly before straightening his sweater and composing himself. "I suppose that would be in order, if we're to be linked." However, he wasn't going to just go in, he would wait for the invitation to be proper and only when invited by movement physically of the host.
Hey that's almost as many eyes as Murmur has!
"Mm, it's that time again." The timeframe was almost becoming predictable, he needed a little more data to be sure but by now he wasn't surprised anymore. Stepping aside and gesturing for Kankri to join him Murmur went to return to his desk to tidy up the piles of scribbled schematics and various gears and strange tiny metal pieces. Might as well try to not look like a complete disaster with his workspace. "This is your... second, I believe?" Judging by how long Kankri had been on board.
Only like four million less lol.
"And which time is this? Does it have a name?" Curiosity was getting the better of him, rather than worry. The talk he had with Murmur was a kindly one and one that he didn't mind in the least over all. While his host continued to try to clean, Kankri took steps in, standing politely for the moment. "Yes, I had been paired with a human, I think. A Richard Strand. Interesting man who didn't realize he was professing ghosts didn't exist while talking to one but was pleasant to deal with, anyway. Do you know him?"
The character limit has betrayed us
"Not that I'm aware of, simply the time in which partners switch around. Allegedly once a strong bond is formed the glyph will glow green and you should not change again." As far as he knew no one had had that happen yet this trip. Murmur gestured vaguely at the various chairs and whatnot the cabins were equipped with. "Please, make yourself comfortable. I apologize, I am not much of a host. Having guests is unusual for me." So unusual he's pretty sure it hasn't ever happened, come to think of it.
At the name he did let out a derisive snort before reigning himself in... he was still a little chafed about the last conversation it would seem. "Oh yes, we've met. I'm afraid he and I have something of a disagreement at the moment." A beat. "You do not currently appear to be a ghost?" He missed that part on their last conversation.
no subject
"Ah, thank you." Taking the offer, Kankri sat himself down in the nearest chair, one leg politely over the other with his hands mid thigh, mirroring the action. "That's tragic. You're a very interesting conversationalist." The room state wasn't Kankri's to comment on, it reminded him of a few of the people he knew back home that weren't in his session but certainly some that were.
That sound though, that signified something and Kankri's head tilted to the side in the smallest of ticks of curiosity. A disagreement. Well that didn't seem unlikely. "Richard really did seem to have a way with his beliefs. But you're right, I was very extremely dead and it seems that here I'm the exact opposite. Much to my dismay." He paused, thinking a moment. "I suppose not entire dismay, but it's discerning being mortal when semi-immortality kept me safe. That being, once you're dead, you don't die twice mostly."

At least their cabins came equipped with a decent amount of furnishings so that they could comfortably socialize during the long trips. Or sleep, though Murmur's bed looked quite untouched. "Ah, well thank you. That's very kind of you to say. I must admit that it is rare to have the pleasure of such an enjoyable conversation partner." Most were either too wrapped up in themselves and in fulfilling whatever desires they had at the time, or fighting. Neither of which were particularly interesting to Murmur.
"He is quite unyielding," Which is really putting it mildly, but Murmur's not about to air his dirty laundry. Strand will make enough of an ass of himself without any assistance, he's quite confident in that. "I am sorry for... well whichever is the less pleasant outcome for you. I must admit I am surprised, most do not take to death with such grace, but I do understand. It's quite difficult to expire twice." Now that he'd successfully shuffled several piles of mess into one disheveled pile of mess he seemed satisfied with his failure to organize and instead moved to take a chair and give his company his full attention.
"That said, it is rare for an opportunity at a second chance. Might as well make the best of what cards we are dealt, no?"
no subject
"I didn't get to talk to him too often, but I felt that he might be set in his ways." Strand was still the first person to treat him kindly as far as that went. To the point of his death, he just simply nodded. It wasn't something he liked to remember and here with strange people he might have to a little often. More than he enjoyed. "I agree, and I'm doing just that. I'm taking the opportunity to write down interspecies mingling guides as I've done a countless measure of study on it. Not to say that I'm an expert, but I know quite a few things. Inclusive of an ally of mine who believes he's trapped in a body much like my own but is human himself." Not entirely something Kankri believed, either, but he wouldn't dare not support it in case Cronus wasn't being disingenuous about it. "But, enough about me. You seem to have a few projects of your own. What are you working on?"
no subject
"So it would seem, he becomes quite... accusatory when his world view is challenged." Or at least he had in Murmur's case, though that might have had more to do with the nature of the challenge. Completely unintentional on Murmur's part, but he also couldn't help it. It's not as though he can simply close his eyes and the light goes out. "You have experience with situations such as this, the interspecies mingling?" Interesting! Murmur would like to hear more on that. The second part earns a thoughtful hum. "A misplaced soul? It does happen." Now he can't confirm if it were genuinely the case with the friend Kankri was referring to, but not completely impossible either.
"Oh! This?" Someone actually interested in his projects? Now that's new! He picked up what appeared to be a partially constructed clockwork machine of some kind, both geometric and somewhat spidery in appearance, at least in legs. "I build these in my spare time, or creations like them. Mostly with intent to perform a specific task, organizing or the like," Something he was clearly not particularly prone to doing himself. "Though I think this will be more of the study and companion variety. I do miss my last one, hopefully she isn't causing too much chaos in my absence." Interesting he gave a machine a gender.

The intricacy has Kankri looking with interest at every angle he can for the moment. "You give them sentience?" he asked idly, too afraid to even go near it lest he ever find the one weakness it had and have it crumble in his curiosity. The gender thing wasn't so off, Cronus called his ships women. Then again he called his guitar a woman, too. "Murmur, I do have to ask. Why exactly was your world view a threat to Doctor Strand's world view?"
no subject
No, really, it's fine, you can touch it. He'll just set it on the table in front of Kanrki where he can safely inspect it closer if he so desires. In addition to the geometric design the casing is covered in intricate and delicate patterns, spellwork if Kankri were at all familiar. Otherwise it would likely just look like extremely intricate decoration, which it really was as well. "Not quite true sentience, though a mimicry thereof. I cannot create a soul, and doing such would be an aberration. Instead I can infuse it with an aspect of myself. Thus far I have learned that unfettered curiosity can be somewhat... destructive."
He almost sounded fond of that. Not the destructive part, just how much he really liked that automoton. That question gives him pause as he tries to figure out how best to word it. Problem is, while he can lie doing as much is terribly unpleasant. And he'd hate to start off this relationship by being openly and willfully dishonest. Obfuscation doesn't count. "Ah, well, you see, it is less my world view and more my existence which troubles him." And challenges his world view.

With a cautious look upward he turned his eyes back down almost immediately when the gadget got set down in front of him. That was most certainly an invitation to look and he most certainly was going to. The question being answered also did nothing to stem the speculation that Kankri had about Murmur not being 'a normal human, fellow humans'. "A soul isn't sentience." But they could have that conversation any other time.
With a knowing nod, Kankri continued to look on at the object in front of him, turning it very carefully to continue to look. "Mm... I suspected as much. However, you won't find me judging you, I can understand the necessity of secrets to either protect yourself or others. I would like, going forward, that I'm not lied to unless one of those two protocol would have been broken. I will be nothing but brutally honest with you about any of your curiosities or about behaviour like that." His head popped up and his eyes travelled back to Murmur's.
At least the humanesque set. "Are we of agreement?"no subject
"True enough, a soul is not a necessary component." He's still deeply disturbed by the presence of artificial intelligence. Especially after meeting the extraordinarily hostile and dangerous Head. There's a strong possibility he hates robots now, still undecided.
"You have my apologies, though in my defense I never claimed to be human, I have simply allowed the disguise to stand as it is intended. I understand your disagreement with the deception." It is necessary, though at least with Kankri admitting it is probably not breaking any rules. He thinks. Kankri isn't technically human after all. He nods. "Agreed." If he wants to know why the deception he'll have to ask, but Murmur will answer.
no subject
"Oh, I see. You're claiming a lie by omission, or rather just not being up front." That wasn't a question. Kankri was as far from human as things got at one time and the tilt of his head that moved horns on the crown of them told the story on its own. "While I condone the agreement, I also can't agree with treating other species with kid gloves. What catastrophic plague would descend upon our poor minds from being honest?"
no subject
It was... disturbing. But not something he was going to burden his new friend with.
"Correct," Which, while the distinction was thin it was still necessary. He will agree that it isn't perhaps the best method to conduct himself but it has been one born out of need. That comment earned a laugh, but it was one of tired mirthlessness. Of absurdity. "If only that were true! Were that I did not have to weigh myself down with this fragile vessel and it's continuous upkeep. Dancing around words and laws that are outlandishly outdated. Unfortunately in the case of humankind specifically the catastrophes have been great. Even today thousands of years after we'd pulled ourselves away and faded into nothing more than fiction for them they still reverberate the damage we inadvertently caused. It is by necessity we hide."
no subject
At least there was honesty at that point and it looked as though his body language belied that he appreciated it. His arms weren't as crossed tightly over his chest and also, despite that normally he would've spoken up, he listened quietly. Lately, here, where no one knew him he had more room to do the sort of thing he wanted to begin to learn to do.
"That sounds ludicrous." he summarized, sighing softly. "If you had such a hand on humankind which definitely denotes we are not from the same world, then you should have used that power for guiding them once you ruined them. How foolish to step back at that point and leave your--your being a generalized construct, not you specifically. But leaving your mess for someone else to clean up. Really, if you're an enlightened being, it sounds like you've cosmically broken the last nutrient plateau and didn't wish to have been found out for the fallout of what you wrought. 'You'--" enjoy the momentary air quotes before he crossed his arms again, "Being generalized again. You're referring to a 'we' and therefore, though I feel nothing but abhorrent to do it, I must use a broad brush."
Lifting his finger, he stood with one of his hips to the side, a comfortable look for him, "However. I'm not here to judge, but it is definitely not an excuse for treating them as though they're incapable. They were capable of understanding what happened to be their downfall, they would be understanding of what they needed to correct their behaviour. Don't treat all of us here as though we are cut of the same cloth from past failures that shouldn't weigh on one single individual as though it's your fault specifically when you refer to a 'we'."
no subject
"I do not disagree," Murmur gestured somewhat dismissively, though there was a weight of exhaustion in his tone and manner when speaking about this that went far beyond the physical. The weight of someone bashing their head against the brick wall of a system that was utterly unyielding. "I am but one voice against many, a scholar among warriors. As I am sure you can imagine they are not often inclined to humor alternative viewpoints." The warrior types weren't always great at nuance, after all. And tended to be very stabby about dissonance. "It's a complicated situation. Political, more than a little... xenophobic at times. Calling us 'enlightened' may be excessively generous." Kankri got one of the patient and not zealous ones.
Again, that dismissive gesture. "Broad is acceptable, I am not one to shirk my own responsibility in the matters at hand. However, my personal function is one that had taken me quite far from the mortal realm for quite some time. There are those who continue to act as guides and guardians albeit in a much more subtle capacity than once we did. There are laws in place, now, laws to which we are bound no matter how far we go within the universe."
He shrugs, somewhat helplessly. "I am not permitted to openly volunteer my identity. Should a mortal guess at it, however, it is within my rights to confirm their suspicions." He's using loopholes to get around restrictive laws without technically breaking them. It's a pain, but also covers him from reprisal. Murmur would very much like not having his wings ripped off after he just got them back, thank you.
