Hey, everyone - Jack here. Or, I guess some of you might know me as “that evil lying bitch from Dualis who only cares about herself.”

[ahem, that’d be jane. not that jack’s still holding a grudge or anything.]

Anyway, the important thing here is that Navi asked me to pass on a message to the group, which is that they’ve picked up on a passenger who is in a great deal of distress but too far away to get a clear link of communication. In other words, one of our merry little band is missing and having an aggressively bad time way out in the woods.

So, consider this a roll call. Time is meaningless out here in the void, so nobody knows if it’s 10 o’clock, but do you know where your partner is? Who’s missing, and who wants to go rescue them from the big bad scary possibly haunted forest?

Damn ... well, looks like we know who's missing, at least. How well do you know him? Got any ideas about where to start looking?

Not at all really. I’m sorry, I wish I could be more help.

That’s OK, we’re all pretty new here. Do you know what he looks like?

White. Heavy set. Mid twenties I think. Glasses.

Hmm ... well, it's somewhere to start, at least. Any chance we can convince you to join us in the search party?

Of course. I wouldn’t leave one of us to Slenderman.

Cool. I'll let you know when we get the whole party together to head out.

Do we like have weapons or anything so we can mount up and make this easier?

Oh ... weapons, yeah. That's a good question. I don't have any myself, but other people might? I can cast a protection spell around a small group but I don't like using attack magick.

What kind of magic do you have?

[sisterswitch]

Protective stuff, mostly - protection, defense, some obfuscation here and there. I dabble a little with elemental manipulation, but it's not really my main focus. I'm a chaos witch, though, so you could say I dabble a little with everything. And it's not really that I have magick - I use it, more like a tool than an innate ability. That's how it works, where I'm from - anyone can study and use magick, not just people who are born from an elite bloodline.

Oh wow. That’s cool. I wonder if it’s the sort of thing one can teach to other people.

[sisterswitch]

Oh, it’s totally teachable! It’s just like learning a language, or math. Usually, there’s a bit of both involved. Sometimes it’s more like chemistry, or cooking, or art. Point is, magick is completely teachable. It’s no more “forbidden knowledge” than physics, or literature, and anyone who says otherwise is a gatekeeping asshole.

You totally could! I can teach you a few things, if you want. It just takes willingness to learn and good intention.

I am so excited! Nobody's ever wanted to learn magick from me before. Usually I just get weird looks or some shitty comment like "You know Harry Potter isn't real, right?" It's actually refreshing to not get treated like an edgy teenager for once.

Well I mean we are on a giant sentient spaceship. I’d be worried if people still had issues with magic being real honestly.

You'd think so, right? But some people are always going to look for a reason to not believe in things that challenge their view of the world.

[sucks to be them.]

Hmm ... wanna start with a warding spell? You can use it on your cabin to make sure no one enters without your permission.

Sure! That sounds like a good idea. And trust me I definitely get the people not believing in things even when they’re right there under their noses. A...friend of mine. He’s a professional skeptic.

[There are times when Alex isn’t sure what to call Strand and that is definitely one of them. ]

Oh. One of those. [jack sighs.] You know, people say atheists and anarchists are obnoxious about their respective so-called dogmas, but I find professional skeptics to be even worse. They're so smug and convinced they're right and everyone else is wrong and won't even entertain any other point of view, in my experience.

Wow. [Alex sounds exceptionally amused. ] it’s almost like you’ve met him.

Oh, I’ve met his type - mostly in college. All of the boys I’ve met who are like that tend to also subscribe to the idea that men are smarter than women because men are just soooo much more logical than women, who are biologically programmed to be more emotional. They’re completely full of shit, of course, but good luck trying to change their minds. [she huffs in disgust.] It’s bullshit like this that reminds me of how happy I am that I’m gay, ‘cause I feel sorry for the girls who are stuck having feelings for guys like that.
