Interesting. Richard's features pique and he smirks.
"Is it safe to drink with the devil?"
He's kidding.
"I'm excited by the prospect."
no subject
He knows a man with the weight of the universe on his shoulders when he sees one.
“Strand, isn’t it? The one with the musically-inclined demons?”
no subject
Strand's features don't fall but a bit of the wind goes out of his sails, "Yes. Alex and Simon must have filled you in at some point."
His teeth set, "I guess it's a good break. Being here, in the middle of the cosmos."
no subject
But he's not going to let himself think too hard about that. Not here and now. Not when he's got a date with the Detective to look forward to.
"But that's for future me to deal with. We're on vacation now, eh? Time to let loose, have some fun!"
no subject
All cultures had their own takes on it and Richard finds himself relaxing, then looking mildly kerfluffled.
"I'm a curmudgeon. I'm planning to return to the ship with my alcohol, pick up my painting and then ..." What. Drink? Read? See Alex. Face Alex.
"What specifically did Alex tell you? If I can ask."
no subject
Sort of comes with the territory of being a dyed-in-the-wool narcissist.
"Anyway, you can't be telling me you're planning to go back to your gloomy, boring cabin on the gloomy, boring sentient space ship to get drunk all by yourself when you could be here, on this planet, getting drunk with a few hundred of your closest strangers? Maybe getting laid?"
no subject
Good god. Getting laid. One face floats to the forefront of his mind and he blinks at it, "I'm not currently in the market for any...companionship."
no subject
Honestly. Some humans are so boring.
Though Lucifer raises his eyebrows at the off the market comment. "Someone back home? Or are you and Miss Reagan...?" he trails off suggestively. He does seem overly concerned about Miss Alex Reagan, though it's not a good sign if he's still planning to go drink alone.
no subject
Translation: He wants people to listen to him.
His sincerity gets no further as he blinks and adjusts his glasses. Yes except, "...No. I am married." was married, "I was married. I think I'm still in recovery."
no subject
His eyebrows go up even further, however, and he blinks. "Am married and was married are two very different things, my friend. Speaking as a divorcee myself - there's nothing like a good rebound to aid in the recovery process."
Lucifer you really need to shut up about the time you were married to someone for ten days.
no subject
He adjusts his bottles, studying him, focused.
"I've tried rebounds. They don't really heal." He really loved Coralee, and she betrayed him, "It insults the lady."
no subject
He waves it off.
"And it's not insulting. There's nothing insulting about two people who desire each other so long as there's no deception involved, no false pretenses. Ladies are perfectly capable of making their own minds up, in my extensive experience."
no subject
No.
Richard looks kicked, staring at the alcohol before he inhales, "Marriage is built on false pretenses. Well, most relationships are built on false pretenses." He stared at his feet before he shakes it off.
"Ladies are capable. I'm sure you gathered that from Alex. It's just me who's not. I was married for years. She took me in she took my daughter in and..."
And.
"And I am not up to a social bar but I could find a bar to get drunk in."
no subject
"Lots of relationships are built on false pretenses, it's true," he says after a moment. "I take it this ex-wife of yours was the betrayer?"
no subject
"She-We had a fight. Decades ago. She disappeared and I was framed and arrested for her murder. I was exonerated but that kind of thing obviously affects you."
How to explain that he had no idea until listening to his future here about how that would turn out.
"Lead the way. I'll buy."
no subject
"Must be especially tough when it's someone you care about," he adds. "But, if you're looking for someone who can relate to being blamed for things they didn't do, well -" He indicates himself like I'm your guy, then points at a somewhat hole-in-the-wall looking bar. "There."
no subject
He fixes his gaze on the hole in the wall and nods, "You and your cohorts, trickster gods and so-called "opposite" beings to morality are what we're encouraged to loathe.
I've never felt like that. Trickster Gods are of interest. The only issue is Alex." and her demons. "She's been very affected by this."
no subject
"Honestly. I'm not a trickster, or a god, and I definitely don't have any cohorts. You can just call me Lucifer - that's my name."
He orders for them - whiskey, of course.
"Anyway, again - relatable. The Detective has always been affected by my missteps. Even before she really knew what I am."
no subject
Every scientific bone in his body is curious. Lucifer. What was he like? Did he talk to his father? Was it all some sort of-
He shoves those thoughts down deep and the moment he thinks maybe just a little psychic peek He buries that thought down deeper because reading minds impossible and ridiculous and he can't and shouldn't and he builds a huge wall around his mind to prevent those thoughts from escaping. To prevent anything from escaping.
Outwardly he might look like a man glazed over before he shakes it off like a dog and nods, "...sorry. Did I- Did you say anything?"
no subject
"I was trying to find relatable, common ground by discussing the women in our lives, but I can see you've got burning questions you want to ask me," he says after a moment. "Go on. Ask away. As I've said, I never lie."
no subject
The women in his life are awful and confusing. Science is easier, science is comforting, it's not rage inducing and heartbreaking like Coralee. It's not confusing and stirring strange protective feelings like Alex. It's-
"...Do you and your father talk about your job? Like is it a work together sort of thing or was it truly a family...something?"
He is the best scientist clearly.
"I can understand that."
no subject
Lucifer drains his first whiskey, then waves the bartender over for another round. He's going to need it if he's going to be grilled about his family.
"I haven't spoken to my Father in millennia. Not since He, you know, kicked me out of the Silver City and tossed me into Hell. Not that He was particularly talkative before that, either. He's always been the strong, silent type."
Hey, so, Lucifer doesn't like his dad! If that wasn't clear.
no subject
"My father was away most of my childhood." There. That's easier than the waves of emotion in this place, "It's nothing comparable, still. Let's drink to women and terrible father figures because sometimes that's all that men have to bond over."
That sounds good.
"I'm sorry. For the record it just burst out because Alex knows everything about me like that. I shouldn't pry and I'm sorry."
no subject
He squints at Richard for a moment.
"You don't have to apologize. I told you to ask me anything. I want to set the record straight. Humans have been telling wild and totally fake stories about me for millennia."
