STDs fall under illness, which has been ruled out. As for curses or punishments, I doubt this person's sins are grievous enough to provoke the wrath of the Almighty, or anyone else with similar abilities.

Curses aren’t known to be real where I’m from so I can’t make an educated guess on that. If you have evidence to the contrary, I’d be interested to hear it.
