So. Time is a construct, right? But it’s a pretty important one to a lot of us. We mark the passage of time in cycles, with celebrations, and I’m guessing most of us have missed at least one birthday, favorite holiday, or anniversary since we’ve been on this long, strange trip. For me, it’s been four birthdays since I was home. Not that I did a whole lot for my birthday, but it was still nice to take myself out for ice cream and check the box for surviving another year.

[the video feed flips around to show the observation room/lucifer’s bar, tastefully decorated with sparkly silver streamers and balloons. as jack slowly pans the camera across the room, you’ll see tables have been brought in and are loaded up with a variety of foods, an assortment of drinks, and of course a nice big cake.]

Anyway, whatever it is you’ve missed, we’re celebrating it - right now. So get thee to the observation room! If nothing else, you can celebrate an unbirthday with the rest of us.

[ A party sounds like a fun idea. A fun thing where people who gather and mingle, and probably not stab each other in the back. At least, that's what Demyx has heard, but what does he really know?

More interesting than anything else is the piano and the man playing it. He approaches, listening with his head cocked a little bit.

No, he doesn't know the song, but if he listens he'll be able to pick up the melody. Lucifer needn't worry - piano playing was never his style anyway.]

Are you going to keep staring indefinitely or will you be making conversation at any point?

[ Lucifer hasn’t moved, hasn’t looked up, hasn’t even stopped playing, his fingers expertly skating over the keys as he addresses the newcomer. ]

[ He's also appreciating how nice this piano is. ]

[ He's actually quite pleased to draw attention, as always. Lucifer's day isn't complete unless he's found some way to perform for an audience, and the more appreciative, the better. ]

Commissioned, huh? That's good. I wouldn't know what to request really, so I'll just listen.

[ He goes into another intro, even as he glances up, spotting Chloe chatting with someone. His expression softens as he starts singing again. ]

[ He listens quietly, because he doesn't know the song and objectively it's a pretty good song. It's not like most of the things he knew how to play either, since he tended to be pretty strictly instrumental. ]

[ He asks, when he has the opportunity to do so. ]

[ Lucifer has, frankly, nearly forgotten that someone is talking to him - he’s enjoying the song, enjoying the ability to watch his girlfriend enjoying herself - so the question brings him up short for a moment.

He pauses the song and turns to look at the questioner. ]

Who? Oh. I never knew her personally, but she was a brilliant trailblazer, of course. All the best musicians are.

Huh. Don't think I've met any. If I did, I don't remember.

[ Demyx smiled a little and shrugged. ]

Never been one for the piano, stringed instruments are more my thing. I play sitar, if you know what that is.

[ He's not sure a lot of people do, they always seem to get it wrong. ]

Musicians, obviously. I mean...I guess you could call my boss a trailblazer...don't think you should calle him incredible or anything. He's kind of not a nice guy.

[ Yeah, the less said about Xehanort the better really, but credit where it's due, he was doing something no one else did even if he was batshit crazy. ]

So how did you learn to play, if you don’t know any musicians? Or is this some weird thing about your universe where you’re magically born with your musical ability?

[ He is genuinely asking! ]

Well, I think...I think I knew someone. [ He sounds like he's considering it. ]

Someone taught me how to play, but I don't remember who.

What, did you get hit on the head and suffer selective amnesia?

"Nah." Demyx said with a laugh. "Nothing like that, I just don't remember my previous life when I was a Somebody. It's not that weird but, most of them seemed to know more than me."

“What, so, reincarnation?” Lucifer quirks an eyebrow at him.

"Not exactly." Demyx said, rubbing the back of his head. "Maybe kinda? Although not really. I'd go back to being myself if I was killed. I think. I don't remember that happening last time, but..." He was rambling.

"I don't know. My heart was taken. I'm a Nobody."

“That all sounds hopelessly and unnecessarily confusing,” Lucifer says, turning back to the piano and sliding into something jazzy.
