Typical Matt, making flirty jokes even when he’s dead. Mello manages to huff a quiet almost-laugh, but he can’t bring himself to return his friend’s words with any of his own in a similar spirit. He’s done that so many times in the past, played into flirting and attraction with someone to get something he wanted, and he simply can’t use the same disingenuous tactics with Matt. Not with someone he actually cares about.
“Oh, haven’t you heard? I’m an eternal bachelor.”
No husband to find them out. Not that he’s bitter about it or anything. Mello drops his foot from where it’s propped on the porch railing and gestures an invitation for Matt to sit.
“There’s definitely something wrong about this place,” he agrees, but pauses, lips pressed tightly together. Does Matt not remember what happened to him? Surely he can’t be OK with it ... right?
“But not everything is wrong. At least one thing they’ve told us is right.” The fact that they’re dead. Mello takes a deep breath to steady his shaking heart and shifts in his chair to face his friend. Carefully, he removes the sunglasses, because Matt at least deserves an honest look in the eyes for this.

“Matt ... I’m sorry. You shouldn’t be here.”
