Well, I suppose I should be grateful that it's not a goddamn tape recorder.

[alive, and yes, not happy to hear from jon but that’s not what’s important. jon can hardly believe it’s true. he lightly clears his throat.]

How - how are you?

Well, I was doing pretty great to be away from that bullshit place but then you showed up so now I’m not doing so hot.

So I die then. Cause you seem pretty surprised to see me alive.

I’ve been here for quite some time, actually.

[seven months in cryo, several more on either side of that. more than a year now, for certain. but more importantly:]

I, erm … I don’t know. [he assumes so, however, and he knows it’s his fault.] Honestly, I’d be surprised to see any of you here. You’re the first person I’ve recognized since I arrived.

[and despite their problems, jon is undeniable glad to hear tim’s voice.]

You don’t remember what happened?

Obviously I don't know what happened. But given what Elias said it's not exactly a shock that I didn't make it out.

[And you know, how suicidal he was, but he's not saying that.]

How long is a long time?

[he doesn’t need to say it - jon knows. and tim would be unlikely to believe it, but jon can relate. 🙃]

At least a year. Probably more, I can’t be certain. I was, erm - I was unconscious for several months. Twice, actually - but we all were, this last time. No one really knows how long we were out. Could’ve been years, for all we know.

[he’s starting to ramble, because jon does that when he’s nervous, and he’s very nervous about being in the same space as tim again. the other man’s made his feelings about jon quite clear, but jon doesn’t feel the same at all. since he’s been traveling with navi and their passengers, jon’s had a lot of time to ruminate on what happened during the unknowing and just how badly he failed team archive. he inhales a deep breath to steady his nerves and refocus his words.]

Tim … what is the last thing you remember? Before you woke up here, I mean.

Of course they're here. Of course they are.

They make a satisfying sound when they explode.

A year?! A whole ruddy year? And you don't know what happened? So our entire world could be like that fucking circus and you don't even know?

[There's definitely a part of Tim that feels a little broken by that, because while there's always been the possibility of failure (of a lot of things, honestly. Failure to save everyone, failure to get his revenge, failure about what Martin and Melanie were doing to get Elias and bring him down in a way that didn't kill the entire Institute... There were more ways for them to fail than there were for them to succeed.) he had always thought that at least they'd know. That someone would know. And now Jon's here with all his bullshit mindreading and everything else and he doesn't even know.

So he just hangs up with a sigh of disgust.]

[He's had some time and some drinks and I'm sure that's fine.]

The last thing I remember is being in my flat and recording that fucking statement before we were going to Great Yarmouth.

A fair few. You should try it, it's very cathartic.

[jon knows tim well enough to know that chasing after him when he gets this angry will do neither of them any good. so he resolves to pick the conversation up with him later, after he’s had some time to cool off. he’s pleasantly surprised that tim messages him first, and speaking to him again much sooner than jon would’ve expected.]

You hadn’t gone to the museum yet, [he comments, mostly for his own solidification of timelines. jon exhales a quick sigh of relief.] That’s - that’s good.

[tim’s unlikely to agree with him but they don’t agree on much anyway these days.]

Please don’t encourage him.

[He laughs, musically. You know he's not going to stop Jon.]

[yeah … he knows. but jon has to at least try. he sighs.]

I’m serious. Tim has a … a particularly strong hatred for the tape recorders. [a pause, then he adds, muttered under his breath:] And me.

[Ah, that second one could be a problem.]

Does not an appropriately placed outburst of violence assist in tempering such emotions?

[A beat, as he doesn't want to discuss this too publicly.]

Should I be concerned?

It’s … it’s fine.

[it’s not like tim’s an avatar himself, so it’s unlikely he can do any real permanent damage to jon. right?]

He’s had plenty of opportunity to attack me before now, and he hasn’t yet.

[His tone is faintly dubious, beneath the monotone, but this does sound like a battle Jon needs to wage on his own. He may be under Murmur's protection, but that doesn't mean from every minor inconvenience that might trouble him. Just the serious threats.]
